Terminology
Before presenting The Negative Sudoku Dot System, let's agree on terminology:
- A cell is a single space, or square, available to a single number.
- A box is a nine-by-nine set of cells. There are nine boxes, arranged like the numbers on a telephone. Box one is in the upper-left-hand corner. Box eight is in the middle of the bottom row.
- A row is a horizontal set of cells, one cell high, nine cells wide. There are nine rows.
- A column is a vertical set of cells, one cell wide, nine cells high. There are nine columns.
- The grid is the entire puzzle.
Identifying a particular cell
(taught by example)
- Square three in box four is highlighted green. This is abbreviated
c3b4 (meaning Cell three, Box four).
- Square five in box nine is highlighted red. This is abbreviated
c5b9.
- Square seven in box one is highlighted blue. This is abbreviated
c7b1.
